YOu must add user into the group. People can not join themselves. 

What you can is : connect to the applicant by your own account and then add this person to the group. There is also a barcode in your group. Scan this barcode .... if you need to do this phone on phone: join by scanning barcode.

To rename, please tap top right (people icon) and you can find the menu there.
